On the Road with Mark Simmers

From Abu Dubai to Australia, the opportunity to travel is one of the many perks of operating an international enterprise. One of our longest-standing team members, Mark Simmers, has played an integral role in our development strategy. Successfully working in over eighteen countries and six continents, we aim to increase our international presence year on year. With exceptional team members on board, we are well on target to achieving this level of growth.

While ROMAR was put on the map in the year 2000, Simmers’ journey took off in 2012. Joining us as a Workshop Operative, Simmers’ flair for travel and surveyance evolved into a Technical Support role in 2020. We’ve heard from Mark, who shares insight into one of his latest adventures in Norway.

“As appointed Technical Support, my role takes me around the world to survey platforms and rigs for the installation of our SWARF systems. I’ve had the pleasure of working on rigs at the quayside, offshore and land rigs. I’ve travelled to numerous countries and continents, although America’s still on my list! It’s not all glamour when travelling; I’ve worked in some mega-hot countries during the height of summer, which isn’t great when head to toe in a boiler suit. Recently, I had the opportunity to travel onboard a rig in Norway at the quayside for my first trip of 2022.

“During my time in Norway, I was responsible for ensuring the data and materials were on track to install our SS1000 magnetic separation handling systems. By liaising with the offshore team and clients, I ensured that everything was suitably placed for future SWARF operations.

“Admittedly, 2020 was an interesting year to embark on a new role that relies heavily on international travel. Still, through preparation, I adapted to the ever-changing restrictions of the pandemic. Like other businesses, I’m learning as I go. Now when I set foot at the airport, I extensively research the rules of the country. By adapting to the different COVID-19 regulations and testing procedures, I have the opportunity to create new relationships, try exotic foods and explore diverse cultures.”
