Christmas is the time of year for celebration and togetherness. Sadly, it’s also the time of year where those less fortunate in society go without, whether it’s food, warmth or presents under the tree; the winter months can be both challenging and uncertain.
At ROMAR, our team continually strives to do better for our community, people and planet. That’s why we endeavour to support those who need it most in our local area every festive season.
NorthSound Cash for Kids is a local charity that helps children in need across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. You might remember our team completing the 15-mile stretch from Newburgh to Aberdeen while dressed as inflatable turkeys to raise a fantastic £3,500 for the Mission Christmas appeal. This year, our team of hard-working turkeys have retired their costumes as we get ready to open a new workshop facility in the new year.
While none of the ROMAR team will be donning inflatable outfits in 2021, we’ve chosen to donate to the Coats for Kids initiative. On average, three children in every classroom throughout Aberdeen will go to school this winter without a warm coat to wear. The Coats for Kids initiative provides families with a £50 voucher to buy cosy clothing during the winter months. Demand in 2021 is at its highest, with a 55% increase in applications since 2020 – that’s a total of 2,711 local kids without a winter coat.
Michelle Ferguson, Charity Manager, commented on ROMAR’s continued support. She said: “I don’t think we’ll ever forget ROMAR and their Christmas turkeys! I was delighted when they got back in touch to support us once again this festive season. Our Coats for Kids appeal has seen an astonishing increase of applications this year. This means our original cash target of £95,000 has risen to £135,500. Our work would be impossible without support from local businesses such as ROMAR International; their donation will provide 15 children with warmth as the winter weather hits hard this festive season.”
